The Global Impact Challenge supports British non-profits using tech to tackle the world's toughest problems. The 10 finalists are in, help decide who wins. Project: War Child will use crowdsourced digital mapping to reduce sexual violence and support child protection in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Helplines and SMS technology will enable War Child to advocate for child protection, analyse trends, and maximise support for affected children. Impact: An average of two children are raped or abused every hour in Goma, DRC. This statistic is likely underreported due to stigma and fear. War Child plans to use anonymous crowdsourced mapping to show the true impact of rape against children in the DRC. Using information collected through SMS and helplines, War Child will respond quickly to kids who are most in need. Over 18 months, this project will provide counseling for 3,000 young people and, through mapping, prevent the rape of an estimated 6,000 children annually. War Child's vision is a world where children's lives are no longer torn apart by war.

The long term vision is that wherever people use cards or mobile, they can donate electronic pennies, ultimately raising an additional £50M annually for charities worldwide.

The data is shared with government, contractors, the media and development agencies who can resolve reported issues. Impact: Up to 25% of aid given to war-torn countries is lost due to fraud, corruption and mismanagement, totalling £8 billion annually. Integrity Action plans to develop an online data collection and reporting platform that enables citizens to hold government and development agencies accountable. Over 18 months, Integrity Action will train over 2,000 community monitors in seven war-torn countries and help citizens fix 50% of problems in public services and infrastructure projects. This will ultimately lead to better quality of life for over 500,000 poor people.

Project: vInspired will connect unemployed young people in the UK with opportunities to enter the workforce through Task Squad, a digital microwork platform. By connecting young people to short, flexible tasks, they learn skills, earn money and cultivate 21st century job experiences. Impact: Currently, one in four 16-24 year olds in the UK is unemployed. At the same time, businesses and organisations need proven, value-for-money candidates to work on short-term tasks. vInspired plans to scale a digital platform for young adults to find and apply for microwork. They include small jobs, corporate errands, and short-term positions lasting from a couple hours to a week. Over three years, this will provide work for over 275,000 young adults, giving them tools to reach their potential, ultimately providing thousands of opportunities for young people to make their impact on the world.

Impact: In London alone there were over 80,000 new tech job openings in the past two years yet, last year, only 3,420 students took Computing A-level in the whole of England. Out of those, 255 were girls. Focusing on low income and underrepresented communities, Apps for Good plans to engage UK youth in app creation through an online platform and in-classroom training. Over three years, Apps for Good will reach more than 175,000 students. The ultimate goal is to change the future of tech education and develop a new generation of tech entrepreneurs in the UK and around the world.

Project: Amnesty International will work with activists and partners to develop a mobile alert system that enables individuals to immediately transmit a message to their trusted networks in an emergency. Impact: Human rights activists are under threat around the world. Too often they are subject to violence, torture, or disappearance. Amnesty International plans to launch a mobile alert system, and train and support activist networks to use it. The system will be scaled globally, aiming to reach between 75,000-100,000 people over 2.5 years. This rapid response tool will revolutionise the way activists work and therefore how human rights are protected around the world.

Project: SolarAid will scale access to solar lighting in off-grid communities in Africa by establishing a distribution network with local entrepreneurs. Impact: Over 110 million households in rural Africa rely on kerosene lamps, which emit harmful smoke and can cost up to 20% of a household's income. A £5 solar light lasts 5 years and is just 2% the cost of kerosene. SolarAid plans to work with Tanzanian entrepreneurs to create a solar hub for their communities, offering affordable, clean lighting, and providing job opportunities. Over 3 years, solar lighting will reach 11.2 million people, saving up to £196 million in income and reducing respiratory illness. Ultimately, SolarAid aims to replace kerosene lamps in Africa by 2020.

Rhino poaching increased by over 40% from 2011-2012, posing a real threat to communities and tourism operations that depend on wildlife. Over two years, ZSL plans to reduce poaching incidents in a threatened Kenyan protected area by 50%, providing greater protection for endangered rhinos, elephants, and more.
